Our lives are fast paced. Virtual learning in our new environments can be stressful. The simple act of teaching children how to stop, focus, and just breathe could be a wonderful gift.
Mindfulness meditation on breath uses breathing techniques to promote a state of mind for calm. It involves sitting quietly, resting, or closing your eyes and bringing your attention to your breath. For example, you may breathe in for five seconds, hold for two seconds and breathe out five seconds and repeat. If your attention drifts away, be kind to yourself. Simply bring your attention back to your breath.
Other times to incorporate deep breathing techniques may be during your children’s bedtime routine — it can help them wind down for the night. Children can learn to manage strong emotions by taking deep breaths as they feel anxious about a task or request. Remind children to take a few deep breaths before answering a difficult question, taking a test, or before an athletic performance.
Breathing exercises help children of all ages function more effectively and clearly.
