On Tuesday, Dec. 28 at approximately 8:15 p.m. an SUV traveling westbound along Georgetown Pike in Great Falls struck a utility pole, snapping it in half. The wires stayed attached and allowed the broken shaft to remain upright, and power was not immediately lost to the neighborhood. The vehicle came to rest upside-down in the road edge opposite the entrance to Boehms Court.

Fire and rescue vehicles were on the scene in a matter of minutes, followed shortly by the police. There appeared to be no serious injuries, based upon the behaviors of everyone present, but this has not been fact-checked. By 8:45 p.m. the emergency vehicles had dispersed, while police remained to direct traffic and assist Dominion Power in placing its trucks for repair work. A replacement utility pole was trucked to the site, and power was turned off from about midnight until 3:30 or thereabouts, as the new equipment was installed.

Prior to this incident, there have been 83 vehicle crashes recorded in the DMV database resulting in injury or property damage on Georgetown Pike during 2021. This particular stretch has been the scene of many of these. Although it does not contain the twists and curves of the portion of the road between Old Dominion Drive and Springhill Road, this segment is narrow, has no meaningful shoulders and contains many blind spots caused by the gentle ups and downs of the roadbed.
