The McLean Patch and other news sources are reporting that a new state law allowing a mask opt-out for students in schools begins March 1 and that Fairfax County Public Schools will give families that option.

In a statement, FCPS said it would continue to require masks until the COVID-19 community transmission level is moderate. However, the school district said it would follow the state law and allow parents or guardians to choose if their child will wear a mask starting March 1. FCPS “strongly recommends” children continue to wear a mask in schools. The legislation does not apply to FCPS staff.

Fairfax County recently changed from high to substantial transmission, according to Virginia Department of Health data. FCPS said it would drop the mask requirement if Fairfax County is in moderate or low transmission.
