Earlier last week the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 9-1 to adopt a $4.8 billion FY2023 budget. Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity voted against it.

Although the board lowered the county’s tax rate for homes from $1.14 to $1.11 per $100 of assessed value, homeowners will end up paying an average of $465 more per year. The budget includes $10 million for more affordable housing and an additional $6.1 million to increase pay for public safety workers. Additionally, to help soften the blow for county residents, personal property taxes on automobiles will be based on a reduced 85 percent of a vehicle’s assessed value.

Other budget initiatives included Diversion First, opioid use prevention efforts, public safety staffing, and the new language access program.
