A Great Falls non-profit, Berries for Books, is currently holding a children’s book drive. Donated books will benefit elementary school students in the District of Columbia’s Ward 8, which has a reading proficiency rate of 11%. Ward 8, which encompasses much of the city’s Southeast quadrant east of the Anacostia River, has twice the poverty and unemployment rates of the rest of Washington, DC. Moreover, the pandemic has significantly hindered the learning of these students, who really enjoy reading and desire books of their.

When:

Wednesday, July 20th to Friday, August 12th

Books To Donate:

  • Books for grades Pre-K-5th
  • New or gently used
  • Nonfiction: with a copyright of 2019 or later
  • Fiction: age-appropriate and multiculturally sensitive

Berries for Books is a recently-formed 501(c)(3) charity created by Langley High School student Samantha Grayer. Its purposes include increasing, enhancing, advocating, and promoting literacy, particularly in children, through various efforts, including collecting and distributing books, reading events, and other literacy programs; promoting awareness of and publicizing the importance of literacy to the welfare of children, vulnerable persons, and society as a whole; and providing support to other literacy programs of schools or charitable or educational organizations.
