On Sunday, May 3, the Fairfax County Health Department reported 32 more COVID-19 linked deaths, the highest single-day total for the Fairfax Health District and double the previous one-day high of 16 reported just the day before.

The Fairfax Health District, which includes Fairfax County and its towns, plus the City of Falls Church and the City of Fairfax, reported an additional 306 virus cases Sunday, another single-day record.

COVID-19-linked deaths have skyrocketed in the Fairfax Health District over the past week. As of May 3rd, the total number of deaths in the district rose to 189, a 90.9 percent increase from the previous Sunday’s reported total of 99 fatalities.

There are now 4,407 reported cases of the COVID-19 in the Fairfax Health District, an almost 50 percent increase over the last seven days. While the increase in Fairfax’s reported cases is likely due to a ramp up in testing, health officials in Virginia are no longer releasing testing information on individual health districts.

For the state, Virginia now has 18,671 reported cases of Covid-19 including 660 deaths, according to VDH. However, there is no easy access to information about Virginia residents who have recovered from COVID-19. This is because recovery information is not data that the Virginia Department of Health collects. It is important to remember that the experience so far has been that the vast majority of people with COVID-19 recover.

Update: As of Monday morning (May 4th) there have been a total of 204 deaths in the Fairfax Health District, which reported 277 new cases in 24 hours, bringing the district’s total number of cases to 4,684. These numbers change significantly every single day, which is a story in itself.
