Fairfax County Park Authority seeks $112 million in bond referendum
Riverbend Park, February 2020

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized four bond referendums for November 3, 2020 on the general election ballot.  The County sells general obligation bonds to pay for building, renovating or expanding facilities, such as libraries, fire stations and parks.

Voters must approve them through a referendum, and by law, the bonds, if approved, may only be used for the purpose stated in the ballot question.

The currently proposed capital program falls into four project categories. Of the $112 million proposed, the Fairfax County Park Authority will use $100 million to finance:

  • Natural and cultural resource stewardship, including design for a new Riverbend Park Visitor Center;
  • Land acquisition and open space preservation, including easements to expand parks, protect resources, and enhance parks in underserved areas of the county;
  • New park development.

The remaining $12 million is intended to fund the county’s share for the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority’scapital program that focuses on park renovations and upgrades, which are critical countywide renovations and lifecycle systems replacement needs, including community park upgrades at Turner Farm Park, among others. The purposes of these renovations and upgrades include:

  • Expanding public open space and trails.
  • Protecting natural, cultural and historic resources.
  • Improving existing facilities.
  • Providing additional recreational opportunities.

FCPS says that it encourages voters to get more familiar with the proposed projects and initiatives listed below either specifically or by category.  Its goal is to inform the public so they can make a decision on the bond question based on the facts and knowledge of the issues at hand.
