Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division continue to investigate the undetermined death of an adult male whose body was recovered on Tuesday, July 21 in the Wet Bottom area of the Potomac River.

The decedent has been identified as Ankit Kumar, age 30, of McLean, Virginia.

On Tuesday, July 21, at approximately 7:06 p.m., a Maryland resident who was kayaking on the Potomac River called the Emergency Communication Center (9-1-1) to report a possible deceased individual in the Wet Bottom area of the river (located south of Great Falls near Sandy Landing).  Crews trained in swift water rescue responded to the call when observers thought it might have been a swimmer needing help and located Kumar deceased in the river. After recovering the body, Montgomery County emergency officials were not able to immediately identify who the person was, since they had no reports of anyone missing as a swimmer or in a boat. However, Fairfax County police took a missing person report just after 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday for Kumar, which aided Maryland officials in their identification.

Montgomery County police report that detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death.  His body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, the results of which are pending as of July 23.
