Billy Ray White, the 64-year-old owner of Captain White’s Seafood, in Washington, D.C., died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash Tuesday evening in Great Falls.
White opened the popular seafood market in Southwest DC, known for its large sign, in 1972 with his brother Sunny, kicking off a love affair with the city that lasted generations, the local television station News4 reported.
“Every day when we come to work he is everywhere and in every detail,” his family wrote in a Facebook post. “He will never be forgotten and always will be missed.”
A preliminary investigation determined that White’s Ford F350 was traveling eastbound on Walker Road when it crossed over the double yellow line, left the roadway and struck a Dodge Ram that tried to avoid the crash. It then struck a utility pole and overturned back onto the roadway. The driver of the Dodge Ram was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life threatening.
County police said in a statement that detectives are investigating whether a possible medical emergency may have contributed to the crash. Family members believe the crash was caused after White had a health complication while driving.
White is remembered by his wife, Penny, his brother Sonny, his grandson Douglas, his sons Mark and Pete and their families.
