The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently passed a resolution aimed at addressing the traffic problems in Great Falls. The resolution called for sending a letter to U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton (VA-10) and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), requesting their support.

The letter from the Board of Supervisors was sent to Wexton and Warner on January 25, 2022, expressing the Board’s support for dedicated annual funding of $100,000 for traffic control at the park beginning with the FY 2023 U.S. Park Police/National Park Service budget submission. The letter expresses their support in making traffic control at the park part of the regular duties and responsibilities of the Park Police.

The money would be used to pay the overtime costs of officers providing traffic control at the intersection of Georgetown Pike and Old Dominion Drive, making this part of their regular duties.

The Great Falls Citizens Association (GFCA) has been actively engaged with the Board of Supervisors, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the National Park Service for the past seven years to find a solution to congestion on local roads near Great Falls Park.

Last June, GFCA contacted Congresswoman Wexton and Senator Warner requesting that new dedicated funding be added to the annual Interior Appropriations Bill to pay for traffic management beginning in fiscal year 2022. However, the request was unable to be included in the FY 2022 bill, hence the request that dedicated funding be made available commencing with the 2023 budget.
